Recently, Bob and I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of dear friends of ours. They have been together nine years and it felt so special that they had reached a place of honouring their relationship with a wonderful creative ceremony, expressing their love and commitment to one another.
Marriage isn’t for everyone of course and there are many ways of bringing awareness to the bond that you have together. We personally decided to create a retreat for ourselves over a few days away bringing together all the trappings of our relationship, including our wedding ceremony and photos. We also brought anniversary cards we had given one another over 17 years plus music we love and favourite movies, special items etc. It made a beautiful display and took us on an exciting and moving journey of reminiscence.
The thing that surprised us both was when we looked at our wedding ceremony and the photos of the day, (in 2001) we found ourselves reliving it and having a deep, wonderful experience. We have been re-ignited in love!!!
I wonder if this could be something you may like to create together as a ritual of reconnection. You can do it your own way and, as I said earlier, it may be about your togetherness rather than a wedding.
To finish, I would love to share the poem I was asked to read at the wedding of our friends. It is especially poignant for couples who have been together for quite a long time.
An Excerpt from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières
Love is a temporary madness.
It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides.
And when it subsides, you have to make a decision.
You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together
that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.
Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness,
It is not excitement,
It is not the expression of eternal passion.
That is just being “in love” which any fool can do.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away,
And this is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground,
And when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches,
They find that they are one tree and not two.
With love
